It seems almost every road we travel, is at some or other time, undergoing repairs, maintenance or a combination of those with something else. In the Cape on the N2 and on Gauteng’s M1 we have additional challenges as the motorways undergo major revamps. This means drivers need to keep a watchful eye out when driving in work zones and respond with caution.
Work zones can be dangerous places and demand a driver’s undivided attention. MasterDrive offers these tips to promote work zone safety:
- Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits which are in all probability 1/3 to ½ less than the normal speed limit.
- Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected. Workers may seem to know you are ‘there’ but a slight misstep can have them land up in the path of an oncoming vehicle.
- Watch for workers; drive with caution.
- Don’t change lanes unnecessarily. Particularly if there is a solid line – no joke, it happens all the time.
- Avoid using mobile phones (or for that matter engaging in any activity that falls under the category of DWD) while driving in work zones.
- Turn on headlights (if you don’t travel with them on already) so workers and other drivers can see you.
- Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
- Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
- Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
- And finally – Be Patient!
Till next time – take care, be patient, especially when there is construction taking place. Treat other drivers as you would like to be treated.
